Custom build vs Squarespace, Wix and GoDaddy
A site builder is the right answer when you need to be online cheaply and you do not mind looking like everyone else. A custom build is the right answer when the site is how people decide whether to trust you with a job. Most small companies start with the first and move to the second later, usually after losing work to a competitor who looked more established.
What the builders are genuinely good at
Squarespace, Wix and GoDaddy are not a scam and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. They get you online this week for the price of lunch. Hosting, security updates and backups are handled. You can change your own hours and phone number without emailing anybody. For a brand new business that needs an address on the internet, that is the correct tool.
Where the cost actually shows up
The monthly never ends. Thirty dollars a month is $360 a year and $1,800 over five years, and at the end of it you own nothing. That is already inside the range of a custom build you would still own.
The template is the design. These platforms sell the same few hundred themes to millions of businesses. Within any trade, in any town, several companies are running the same layout. Homeowners cannot name the template, but they can tell when a site looks like a site they have seen before.
Add-ons. Booking, forms that go where you need them, a popup, a review widget. Each one is another app with another monthly fee, and each one loads more code into your pages.
Speed. Builder pages carry the weight of the whole platform whether you use it or not. A slow site on a phone, on a cell connection, in a driveway, is a site somebody leaves.
The ceiling. The moment you want something the platform does not do, the answer is no. Not expensive, not slow. No.
What you give up going custom
This cuts both ways and it is worth being honest about it.
It takes longer. A builder is live in a weekend, a custom site is usually a few weeks. It costs more up front, even though it often costs less over five years. And unless you ask for it at the start, you do not get a drag and drop editor, so changing your own copy means sending an email instead of doing it yourself at ten at night. If that last one matters to you, say so before the build starts, because it changes how the site gets made.
Three questions that tell you which one you are
Does the site need to win the job, or just confirm you exist? A restaurant whose customers already know the name needs hours and a menu. A roofer competing with six other roofers needs a site that makes the choice obvious.
How much is one job worth? If a signed job is worth five thousand dollars, a site that wins one extra job a year has paid for itself several times over. If your average job is forty dollars, a builder is fine.
Will you actually edit it yourself? Most owners say yes and then never log in. If that is you, the self-editing feature you are paying for every month is not a feature.
Can you move a builder site to a custom one later
Yes, and it is easier than people expect. The words, the photos and the domain all come with you. The one thing that does not transfer is the design, which is the part you were replacing anyway. You keep the domain and whatever standing the site has built up with search engines, which is why moving does not put you back at zero.
